I'm currently writing this post wrapped up in several blankets, hugging a hot water bottle and cursing the weather. It's absolutely freezing in the UK at the moment and as always, I find my mind drifting to warmer shores. Hours have been wasted trawling through travel sites, pining for a beautiful beach, bright sunshine and a cocktail or two. One place in particular that has caught my eye is the Canary Islands, especially the island of Tenerife. I've never been to the Canary Islands before and to be honest, they weren't the first place that popped into my head when I thought of winter sun. After a little further research I decided that Tenerife would be perfect for a break from this ghastly rain, wind and frost. Here are five reasons why:
NATURAL BEAUTY
If you're looking for a destination with breathtaking scenery and natural beauty aplenty then you're sure to find it in Tenerife. Try visiting some of the charming villages scattered around the island amongst the abundance of national parks and beautiful beaches. Or you could head to the southern coast where you may even witness dolphins playing in the surf or a whales rising to the surface. Perhaps the most popular national park on the island is that of Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain. The most spectacular views await you at the end of a cable car journey or a guided hike where you can see as far as Gran Canaria.
FAMILY FRIENDLY
It's no secret that Tenerife is a haven for families looking to escape the daily grind and make the most of the school holidays. Renowned for it's family friendly resorts, Tenerife has something for everyone with many activities available for the whole family. You could try out one of their fantastic waterparks (Siam Park is one of Europe's biggest!), get up close to the sealife on a submarine safari or play on one of their many family friendly beaches, such as Playa de las Teresi or Playa Fanabé.
VIBRANT NIGHTLIFE
Proving that it's not just for families, Tenerife also offers a wealth of nightclubs, bars and restaurants. You'll find most of the action in one of the three areas in Playa de las Americas; Starcos, Veronicas and The Patch. Cabaret bars, karaoke and nightclubs are just some of the venues you can choose to visit once the sun has gone down.
AMAZING WEATHER
With beautiful sunshine all year round, Tenerife is known for having the best climate in Spain. The temperature on the south coast rarely drops below 25 degrees during the summer months and even stays a balmy 21 degrees during the winter. The coldest you'll find it here is 14 degrees at night in the winter, so if you plan on visiting make sure you pack a few extra layers for the evenings.
EASY TO TRAVEL TO
It's pretty easy to nab a last minute deal to Tenerife at any time of the year. Many airlines offer flights from airports all over the UK, making it one of the easiest destinations to travel to.
