Just north of Athens, surrounded by a pine forest, is a small, quiet village called Stamata. Renowned for it's tavernas, we decided to take a drive up there on Sunday in search of delicious Greek food. The relaxed atmosphere was apparent as we pulled up, the square was empty with the exception of a dog or two wandering around. Framing the square were several tavernas, each with just a smattering of people sat outside enjoying the evening sunlight and traditional Greek beverages.
We sat ourselves down at one where we were served by a friendly waiter who brought us a basket filled with warm, crusty doorstop bread, covered with a sprinkling of rosemary and drizzled with olive oil. We drank local Greek wine from a carafe and dipped our bread in tzatziki as we waited for our main meals. A beautiful Greek salad was brought to us along with our choice of main; chicken and chips for myself, lamb chops and chips for Dad.
It was such a nice meal followed by a slow ramble around the village. If you're looking for an authentic taverna experience with delicious food then be sure to visit Stamata, although you may want to brush up on your Greek first. Very little to no English is spoken here and there are no English menus available.
It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
